PhET Interactive Simulations is a suite of research-based interactive computer simulations for teaching and learning physics, chemistry, math, and other sciences. But be prepared to watch each child’s progress and try to enable each to go at his pace as he comprehends the concepts. As a quick recap, desirable difficulties are adjustments to teaching that slow down learning in the short term, but improve long-term retention. Do this by asking open ended questions such as “Where do you think that we should start?” and “What are the steps to working out this problem?” Asking these questions will promote the child to think on their own and formulate the process required to solve the problem in their head. Mutlistep tasks can be difficult for students who have trouble organizing, naming, or sequencing; however, experience has shown that these students can be helped by using instructional methods that forge meaning and context through physically organizing objects, naming the action, and writing the process down.

Consistent routines – English learners are freer to concentrate on new concepts if they are familiar with classroom routines. At the end of the first minute in the 3-minute span, the teacher �calls time�, stops the stopwatch, and tells the students to underline the last number written and to put their pencils in the air. Classroom practices used with gifted third and fourth grade students. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Analyze research-based practices for improving mathematics instruction. This knowledge can then be transferred to raised line drawings illustrating area. In a proportion the cross-products are equal: So 3 times 100 is equal to 4 times the PERCENT. To take a closer look at the anatomy of a tiered lesson, we have included a mathematics lesson (see Figure 1) that was developed as part of the Javits Grant, Project GATE, a federally funded partnership between the Indianapolis Public Schools and Ball State University, both in Indiana.
