Not long after that, Aagaard and his family immigrated to my home state of Texas under the sponsorship of a close friend of mine. Eventually I did get to hunt with Finn (for Texas game, not classic African animals) and found everything I’d heard about his hunting prowess and integrity to be true. We became fast friends. In due time Finn, who had published a few articles in African sporting journals, very hesitantly asked if I’d be willing to read a couple of manuscripts and evaluate their potential for the American market.
So Far taught me to move slowly and quietly, with the wind in my face, and to stop every dozen steps or so and look around with a binocular. When he was with me—or should I say when I was with him—we always managed to see the deer before they saw us and usually had a successful stalk up within shooting range. But when I went out by myself, inevitably the first and last thing I saw of the deer was their namesake white tails flagging up behind them as they burst out of a thicket I had just scoured with the binocular.
